We were always looking for ways to engage with Bristol University and UWE students and staff alike. Hopefully if Venue is saved then they will encourage greater interaction, maybe even a few free copies in halls, bars and the Union.L Trimbynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4261499646578582824.post-65384853658998341192009-11-19T02:49:56.605-08:002009-11-19T02:49:56.605-08:00Nick, Thanks for the update on JANET Talk. I would have liked to dialogue with the trial but I wasn't allowed into the JANET Talk mailing list.

At the same time as this trial Cranfield University took out a contract for WebEx Meeting Centre, which we have recently renewed. We use it for collaboration on international research projects and elearning. We had to have a guaranteed service, (which a trial cannot offer).

I agree that telephony is an essential part of the offering. WebEx now allows a mix of telephone and VOIP in the same meeting.

Another important factor for success is internal culture, and it does take some internal marketing for the use to ramp up.

AlanUnknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01538304360813641789noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4261499646578582824.post-17286998324626154062009-11-11T03:12:34.327-08:002009-11-11T03:12:34.327-08:00I think that so long as you're not doing anyth...I think that so long as you're not doing anything too taxing like watching video, the new Macbook's battery life is much more than 2-3 hours: more like 5 or 6 (officially it's 7, but that's clearly not going to be real-world). And it's pretty damn light too :)

Oliver.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05456977743703490977noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4261499646578582824.post-41500031366997820762009-03-09T07:15:00.000-07:002009-03-09T07:15:00.000-07:00I think it would make sense to add that both symbi...I think it would make sense to add that both symbian and android are open source, so the sdk is extendible in both cases. This would allow us for example, to develop our own app to sync with oracle calendar.

Android is already appearing, via it's army of open source tinkerers and hackers, on netbooks and hardware that google didn't particularly intend(such as older organisers or even the HTC touch). So it may well grow more widespread than the iphone by 2010, especially if it can get a good niche on cheaper devices.alehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11999446263501015373noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4261499646578582824.post-51387122494520955302009-01-28T16:00:00.000-08:002009-01-28T16:00:00.000-08:00Hi Nick and thanks for your comment and link. As for whether to publish unfinished stuff, that's the million-dollar question. In theory, we could just label stuff as draft, rough notes etc. but would the audience take note of the disclaimers? It calls to mind when the web was plastered with "under construction" GIFs.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4261499646578582824.post-69187921422483060812009-01-28T06:58:00.000-08:002009-01-28T06:58:00.000-08:00I followup - my favourite quotation on writing"Je ...I followup - my favourite quotation on writing

"Je N'ai fait celle-ci plus longue que parceque je n'ai pas eu le loisir de la faire plus courte."
Blaise Pascal, Lettres provinciales

(I have only made this letter rather long because I have not had time to make it shorter)Nick Skeltonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16703708315798190101noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4261499646578582824.post-35737571712886857332008-07-08T03:53:00.000-07:002008-07-08T03:53:00.000-07:00Great to read a bit more on cloud computing and so...Great to read a bit more on cloud computing and some tips for books on it. Sounds like a good google event there.. But I wonder about Hadoop, and could similar things to google apps be built in a more open source way on top of things like that... http://hadoop.apache.org/

With big data centres, my concern is always with environmental and energy sustainability - which you gave as an example with Leeds Met's decision to use google for email - what reasons did they give for this, and how did they measure it? Is it due to data-centre based computing being similar to thin client setups - where most of the hard work is done by comparatively less and more centralised processors and data stores? I wonder about the environmental costs and benefits of this vs other systems...

Good to see C.J.Adie's web service guidelines are still being passed around - I wonder if he's wikified it now, so it can evolve a bit... (From a web search, doesn't look like it)

Thanks for writing that, great to experiment with web 2.0 by using blogger!

Alealehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11999446263501015373noreply@blogger.com
